Washington, DC…September 20, 2012””American Majority Action President and CEO Ned Ryun released the following statement today in response to the U.S. plummeting from 10th to 18th place in the Economic Freedom of the World 2012 annual rankings released this week.

“This report shows that America is losing ground in one of her most defining cornerstones: economic liberty.  President Obama’s vision of a more dependent society can be clearly seen in this damning assessment of the state of American freedom.  The U.S. has fallen out of the top ten for the first time in history.  Plummeting eight places since last year, we now rank below European welfare states like Denmark and Finland, as well as our Canadian neighbors, and even Middle Eastern nations like Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.

Loss of economic freedom cannot be taken lightly.  The index shows that we are paying a price for the size of our government, high taxes, deficit spending, and overregulation.  An untamed government is destroying the economic foundation of our country, not only jeopardizing the global standing of our nation but directly affecting the quality of life for every American. Less free countries not only have lower incomes, but shorter life expectancy, higher infant mortality, and less political and civil liberties.

Because the recent report examines data from 2010, the current reality could be even bleaker as the Obama Administration moves us away from a free market economy to a more government-centered economic model. Our nation was founded on limited government and true free enterprise and we need leaders willing to implement these vital principles.  The United States economy and the very foundations of our society will continue to weaken unless we keep economic freedom a reality””not just a political talking point.”
